Portrane

Portrane is a small seaside townsland and is a part of the larger town of Donabate in Dublin, Ireland. Its most prominent feature is the hospital. Now over 100 years old, St Ita's Hospital is an impressive collection of red brick buildings which dominate the peninsula. Important features within its main building are two churches and the clock tower. In the hospital grounds is a monument to George Evans, a replica of the round tower in Kildare town. Portrane comes from the Irish Port Reachrainn, meaning the port of Reachrú (place of many shipwrecks), the Irish name for Lambay. The name Lambay itself is a corruption of the Norse name Lambe Eye, meaning the island of lambs or sheep.

Hi,
I lived in Portrane for a while in Healy's Lane and needed to move back into the city for a while due to circumstances. I am just wondering if there is any chalets or cottages available for rent around, cos I would love to move back out again!!!
Please let me know if you know of anything available even in any of the other parts of Fingal apart from Swords

Hi,
My G Great Grandparents, Thomas Fulham & Thomasina
Fulham nee Smart, had a Farm at the end of the Burrow Road.
Thomasina died 1879 & Thomas in 1913.
I've visited Donabate & Portrane a couple of times & seen a few Fulham Graves, but none for the
couple named above. Possibly an unmarked Grave?

Any help would be more than welcome.
Cheers,
Terry Fulham.

The man to contact about anything historical in Donabate/Portrane is Peadar Bates. You should be able to contact him by enquiring at the Post Office in Donabate. The Smart family is still in the area as there is an accountancy practice in Donabate run by a lady who married into the Smart Family. She uses her married name in the practice so she shouldn't be too hard to trace.

Hi Teltoons. All the smarts over the last few generations are buried in the graveyard opposite Grogans shop. The two farms are still standing although only used as houses now.

Fulhams in The Burrow.
Hi,
I'd like to thank cfh, nn, squatter & killerqueen for their interest in my email. I think Peadar Bates must be a very busy man... no reply. Or am just being impatient?
I met Derry Smart & his Sister, Veronica, in November, 2008. Lovely people! Veronica pointed a cottage that used to be a Fulham Farm, at the end of The Burrow road.
In May this year I called in the Brook Pub. The Landlord (I forget his name) said, in his opinion,
"Farmers in the late 1800's weren't to bothered about marking Graves. They better things to do with their money"
Thanks again,
Terry Fulham.

Fulhams of Portrane
Hi Teltoon,

I've started to research my family tree recently and came across you post on the web site while trying to find out more details about my mothers side of the family.

From what I can tell my grandmothers name was Mary Fulham and from asking questions she was from the burrows in portrane. She married Thomas Kavanagh.

The auntie that I have been receiving the information from has advised my that she thinks that her partents names were patrick & mary but that is after making me more confused as from the census records I believed that I had the correct family in the burrow. . being joseph & lizzie Fulham.

Could you be so kind as to advise me if you have come across a patrick & mary fulham in your searches.

Hi Terry,

I got a bit more information yesterday but unfortunatly no dates as people were working off memory. Apparently Patrick would have been Joseph Fulham's brother. Have you come across a patrick fulham? Married to Mary.

Thanks for your time

I'm not after any exact dates, just a rough idea.
Are we talking 1800 something or 1900 something?
I have a photogragh of a gravestone I in took in
Donabate last November. On it, it says "Elizabeth Fulham. Died 10th Feb 1928. Also her husband Joseph. Died 27th Dec 1950. & their daughter Brigid"

Leonards of County Dublin
Hi there, I'm a Leonard researching my extended Leonard family. I'm from USA, but my ancestors came from Portrane/Donabate, and I believe they lived in The Burrow, and still do.

My ancestor was Mathew John Leonard (1854-1939), who was born in Portrane, and died in Portland Maine.

He was one of ten children born to Mathew Leonard & Anna O'Brien-Leonard. Mathew Sr's parents were Patrick Leonard & Elizabeth Hoarish, I believe.

My ancestor Mathew John's siblings were: Patrick (died young), John, Patrick (aka Patsy) who married a Mary Liversage, Elizabeth Leonard-Devine, Annie Leonard-Quinlan-Batchelder, Francis, Alice Leonard, and Ellen Leonard-Smart, and Mary Leonard.

As of 1948, only Francis Leonard & Patrick Leonard were still alive, and were living somewhere in County Dublin.

An Alice Leonard-McLoughlin from Donabate was a member of this family, and I believe she was Patsy's daughter. She visited Portland Maine and New York City to see family in the 1960's. And Frank Devine & Mathew John Leonard Jr, born in Portland Maine, made frequent visits to Portrane/Donabate during WWI and WWII to see family, and would send money home to surviving cousins.

If any of this rings a bell for anyone, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks,

Scott Leonard

I am hoping someone out there can help me put some puzzles pieces together...I was wondering if Henry "Harry" Bates of The Bungalow, Portrane Rd, Donabate, husband of Mary Redmond Bates, who died 12 Oct 1970 is the same as Henry Joseph Bates b. 1895, the son of Robert and Bridget (nee Fulham) Bates?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Roseanna or Rosealeen Fulham The Burrow Portrane
Was also wondering if there are any 'old timers' out there who might remember a distant cousin of mine named Rosaleen or Roseanna Fulham? She died in 1977, but she was born and lived on The Burrow in Portrane. She was the younger daughter of Joseph and Lizzie Fulham and sister to Brigid. Any rememberances or information would be greatfully received by me.
Thank you

Hi, I remember Rosealeen Fulham, I think her full name was Roseanna but was know as Rosaleen. I will tell you what I can remember of her. She never married and lived in Portrane for many years with her sister. She worked for Lambs(in their office I think) who had a fruit growing and jam making buisness. Their trade name was Fruitfield. The fruit for the jam, Strawberries ect was grown locally.
When she retired she moved to somewhere in Blackrock on the soutside as far as I know. I have a vague memory that she died in her house there and was not discovered for a while. I really don't remember her sister well, she was small dark haired person.

Happy Days
Oh what great times I had as a kid in Portrane, my mum (Maureen Kelly) was born and raised in The Burrow, her parents had a farm there run by my mum's brothers Christie and Joe, and we used to vist every summer. My aunt Imelda is unfortunately the only surviving member of that dynasty and she's now in a care home in Rush. I still maintain contact with most of my family and still visit at least once per year. Does anyone remember Pats Chippy near the Brook - it seemed to be THE place to meet for a while. Hello to anyone I may know. Steve Rutter

RE Happy days
We spent 2 weeks every summer in a relatives train carriage down the burrow from about 1956 till 1970
There were 10 of us in the family.
I spent most of my holiday money(which wasn't much) on chips and playing the juke box in Pats chipper.
The shops were Smarts, Butterlys and the Nook.
The bus journey from Donabate station to the Burrow was great.
Anybody got old photos of some of the huts/carriages/buses/trams that people stayed in ?
The whole place has changed, walkways are all blocked up and so many places you cant walk along.
Happy memories !

Great Summers in the 70s
I spent a few summers in Portrane in the 70s. They were some of the best holidays I had. I also stayed in a relatives carriage but at the time I didn't realise that's what it was. I remember that it had a mini golf course in the garden and a path that led from the garden down to the beach. Jumping off the sand dunes was a favourite past time and making boats in the sand. I also remember having fun on the swing boats but can't remember if there were any other rides. Would love to see some photos of the carriages, must ask my cousins if they have any.
