Portrane is a small seaside townsland and is a part of the larger town of Donabate in Dublin, Ireland. Its most prominent feature is the hospital. Now over 100 years old, St Ita's Hospital is an impressive collection of red brick buildings which dominate the peninsula. Important features within its main building are two churches and the clock tower. In the hospital grounds is a monument to George Evans, a replica of the round tower in Kildare town. Portrane comes from the Irish Port Reachrainn, meaning the port of Reachrú (place of many shipwrecks), the Irish name for Lambay. The name Lambay itself is a corruption of the Norse name Lambe Eye, meaning the island of lambs or sheep.
Hi,
I lived in Portrane for a while in Healy's Lane and needed to move back into the city for a while due to circumstances. I am just wondering if there is any chalets or cottages available for rent around, cos I would love to move back out again!!!
Please let me know if you know of anything available even in any of the other parts of Fingal apart from Swords

Hi,
My G Great Grandparents, Thomas Fulham & Thomasina
Fulham nee Smart, had a Farm at the end of the Burrow Road.
Thomasina died 1879 & Thomas in 1913.
I've visited Donabate & Portrane a couple of times & seen a few Fulham Graves, but none for the
couple named above. Possibly an unmarked Grave?
Any help would be more than welcome.
Cheers,
Terry Fulham.

The man to contact about anything historical in Donabate/Portrane is Peadar Bates. You should be able to contact him by enquiring at the Post Office in Donabate. The Smart family is still in the area as there is an accountancy practice in Donabate run by a lady who married into the Smart Family. She uses her married name in the practice so she shouldn't be too hard to trace.

Christine Smart is the lady's name.
Her husband Derry was the foreman who built most of the Viking Houses in Turvey Ave.

Hi Teltoons. All the smarts over the last few generations are buried in the graveyard opposite Grogans shop. The two farms are still standing although only used as houses now.

Fulhams in The Burrow.
Hi,
I'd like to thank cfh, nn, squatter & killerqueen for their interest in my email. I think Peadar Bates must be a very busy man... no reply. Or am just being impatient?
I met Derry Smart & his Sister, Veronica, in November, 2008. Lovely people! Veronica pointed a cottage that used to be a Fulham Farm, at the end of The Burrow road.
In May this year I called in the Brook Pub. The Landlord (I forget his name) said, in his opinion,
"Farmers in the late 1800's weren't to bothered about marking Graves. They better things to do with their money"
Thanks again,
Terry Fulham.

Help
Hi snapper,
Thanks for the email & the offer of help.
A bit of good news. My wife, Marie, as at
last traced her Grandmother, thanks to the
Wexford 1911 census coming on line.

Fulhams of Portrane
Hi Teltoon,
I've started to research my family tree recently and came across you post on the web site while trying to find out more details about my mothers side of the family.
From what I can tell my grandmothers name was Mary Fulham and from asking questions she was from the burrows in portrane. She married Thomas Kavanagh.
The auntie that I have been receiving the information from has advised my that she thinks that her partents names were patrick & mary but that is after making me more confused as from the census records I believed that I had the correct family in the burrow. . being joseph & lizzie Fulham.
Could you be so kind as to advise me if you have come across a patrick & mary fulham in your searches.

Hi Glen,
Your email is a bit vague. Could you give me some dates to work on? I'll then have a look in my records.

Hi Terry,
I got a bit more information yesterday but unfortunatly no dates as people were working off memory. Apparently Patrick would have been Joseph Fulham's brother. Have you come across a patrick fulham? Married to Mary.
Thanks for your time

Hi Glen,
I'm not after any exact dates, just a rough idea.
Are we talking 1800 something or 1900 something?
I have a photogragh of a gravestone I in took in
Donabate last November. On it, it says "Elizabeth Fulham. Died 10th Feb 1928. Also her husband Joseph. Died 27th Dec 1950. & their daughter Brigid"
Cheers,
Terry.
