Proposed football academy at Turvey
Is it just me or is there something worrying about the proposals from Fingal County Council for a ?10m soccer academy at Turvey in Donabate?

The proposal involves an indoor soccer pitch, seating for 400 people, five changing rooms, meeting rooms etc, and parking for 190 cars and 14 coaches. The total footprinte will be 8,170 sq m.

I feel this is inappropriate in an area that has been used as a community wildlife park for the past number of years. Many children from the schools in Donbate, Lusk and Rush have planted trees there.

The football academy, which will be funded by the Sports Council, is a good facility but locating it beside Rogerstown Estuary is not a good idea. The estuary is bird sanctuary, a special protection area (SPA), special conservation area (SCA) etc.

There are 250 acres at Turvey running down to the estuary and owned by the council.

Before this football academy proposal, there were plans to put in paths, encourage greater use by residents of the area and construct a footbridge linking Turvey to Newbridge Demesne. A masterplan outlining all this has been drawn up by the council, but they are refusing to release it at the moment.

Dunnes Stores has applied for permission nearby to build a similar monster warehouse to the Tesco one. A facility like the football academy will put more pressure on for development in the general Turvey area.

I don?t trust this council and suspect the football academy is really just a Trojan horse-type attempt to open up the area for more development.

It would be preferable to have the Turvey parklands turned into a proper community facility, while the football academy would be better located in large population areas with good transport like Swords or Balbriggan.

Any else smell a rat? I certainly do.

i totally agree, iv been researching this area for the last year as i doing my thesis on the regeneration of ballelly dump and i would like to link it with new bridge park through a walkway over the esturay. I have been trying to get info on there proposed wildlife park but there not that forth coming on the information. A football acadamy of that size would have a detramental impact on such a beautiful area.

Tonto, you are right!
This can only be a 'Trojan Horse'. We do need a football academy. But why would anyone want it at the end of Turvey Avenue, miles from anywhere?
I think the people of Donabate are being taken for fools again by Fingal Co. Co.
The 'Public Display' was an example of their contempt for us. It was not on display with all the other plans on the display boards in the foyer of the county hal, although there was plenty of free space. If they did, we might have seen it. And they wouldn't want that!
So they put it up on the first floor. In a place where no one would look.
And just in case someone did look for it, they put it on the back of the display board.
Now tell me that this whole plan doesn't stink!

Send your suubmission to John O'Brien as soon as possible. The final date is December 19th.

EC you have hit the nail on the head there. It is not online which is one of the reasons I am suspicious.

Why is there such a culture of secrecy in Fingal CoCo?
We had it with the monster sewage plant. Now it's with the football academy.
Am I wrong in concluding that if they don't want us to know about something there must be a reason.
And am I wrong in thinking that the reason is whatever they're planning will screw us big time.

Its worrying me if development in this area would compromise a wildlife park that was previously planned.

This proposal will destroy what is "the only remaining estuary in Dublin where a rural and ambience still prevails" as per the Fingal Co Co own masterplan document for the Rogerstown area.

There is of little benefit to the area from the proposal and major environmental risks. Sounds familiar?

As I understand it, in November 2006, Fingal coco produced an excellent masterplan for a community wildlife facility in Turvey.
However, they have refused to adopt it, and have been keeping it secret since then.No one was told about it. Not even the councillors have seen it.
They didn't want us to know that they weren't going to do it.

But also...

While they were drawing this masterplan up, they were also putting together the proposal to site a football stadium in Turvey.
And that was to be a secret also. Except that this time, they didn't want us to know that they were going to do it.
Who writes the script for these guys? They can't be for real!
