Proposed football academy at Turvey
Couldnt agree more. As a foreigner I can say that Ireland is so appealing because of its natural beauty and it would really be a shame if this had to change. I also witnessed a couple of very bad planning decisions (eg Tesco beside Newbridge Park) and sometimes I worry that wellbeing and economical growth will transform the emerald Island into a gloomy anonimous concret island. Please do fight to preserve your natural resources!

I would be more then proud to be remembered and thought of as a tree hugger "S"

biodiversity week 2008 is may 18th 25th

I have seen top class football pitches in this area (Fingal)with carpet like pitches and kids and adults told they can#t play on them because they would "ruin" the pitch one of the most scenic pitches in Ireland is over looking Donabate beach it is little used and makes a joke of its self when it clearly does'nt do what ia was built for.

We have ruined our natural landscapes we have to say STOP in the loudest possible way and I for one give Thanks for/to those people who keep and eye and still have the heart and wisdom to fight off FCC AND ANYONE ElSE WHO NEEDS TO BE REMINDED that we are only caretakers OF THIS PRICLESS WATERWAY and jewel in the crown.

Sporting Finagal have their head office in Swords it would make sense to have their facilities beside them in Swords...or maybe that would be to much like joined up thinking

FINGALS biodiversity is PRICELESS hugs a tree save a bee our children are watching us and they can teach us a thing or two I know mine have "S"

I disagree jmg. Most people here were not in favour of the academy being sited at Turvey. Its not necessarily a representative sample of the community but a few motivated people can make a big difference.

Fair play to everyone who campaigned and petitioned the council including people outside Donabate such as birdwatch Ireland and politicians.

What this all boils down to is the fact that Fingal County Council officials were incompetent and irresponsible to have ever proposed building on the edge of Rogerstown Estuary at Turvey.

Rogerstown is a Ramsar Wetlands site of international importance. As signatories to the Ramsar Convention, Ireland is legally obliged to act to stem the encroachment on and loss of wetlands now and in the future.

Fingal County Council officials are little more than a bunch of chancers, because the EU would never have let them away with building a football academy complex on the edge of an important Ramsar site. Belatedly, the council realised that.

The soccer clubs need to cop on and realise that the villains here are the jokers in Fingal County Council who proposed this site.

A new site will now have to be found. But time has now been lost and money wasted on the Tuvey debacle.

No doubt the council officials will qualify for bonuses again this year.

A new site will be found but not in Donabate/Portrane. There were very few trees on the proposed site it is beside the road, all it was to be was a football pitch and an indoor training area, car parking and seating around the pitch for 400 people. I cannot see it having more effect on the estuary than the Tesco building or the proposed Dunnes Stores development. You will find that other communities would be delighted to have this facility on their doorstep, again I am disappointed that this is now lost to Donabate.

I was gutted to hear the Soccer Acadamy was not coming to Donabate.

It would have been an excellent leisure facility for the youth and adults alike.

I really hope that Fingal County Council reconsider their decision not to site it on Turvey Avenue.

JMC and Johnny , You guys don?t just get it !

By placing the Football academy in Turvey it would be breaking the law. (European law)
And what is it, with some of the prize intellectuals in this community that they continually miss the point.

One such intellectual stated its Just a few burds and now another >>>JMC<< stated it just a few trees

What sort of complete philistines do we have living in our midst ?

As a matter of interest JMC I objected to the Tesco development. Did you?

Have you objected to the proposed development of Dunnes Stores.

People like you make my blood boil from the sheer stupidity of your ignorance.

Steady on Gizmo but I understand your frustration.

It must be comforting for the council that we have people like JMG whom they can hoodwink and sneak in development camouflaged as a facility for the community.

Fear not gizmo I can see your passionate about this.

No doubt some of the philistines will not bother to vote at the next election.
I think it is safe to say there was a victory for the community by stopping this monstrous development

ITS JUST A FEW BALLS

Extract from County Managers report

The Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government recommended that an Appropriate Assessment be carried out because of the proximity of the proposed development to a candidate Special Area of Consevation(Csac) and a Special Protection Area(SPA). This follows on from the requirements of the Habitats Directive 992/45/EEC) in relation to these designated sites and the recent ruling against Ireland by the European Court (Case 4180/04 EC Commission vs. Ireland) which has inter alia major implications for the way Ireland protects areas for birds. The ruling requires a more robust and thorough application by all consent authorities of the requirement to do an appropriate assessment of the ecological implications of a project, whether within or without a designated site, but which may impact upon its conservation objectives.

In this case the appropriate assessment has found that no direct impacts are expected from the proposed development on the cSAC/SPA/pNHA/RAMSAR site(ie Rogerstown Estuary). However the assessment did indicate the potential for indirect impacts on wetland birds listed in the cSAC/SPA/pNHA/RAMSAR due to disturbance from lighting, noise and human activity. It also found that although the proposed development land is cultivated land of low ecological value in itself, it is a buffer that protects the cSAC/SPA/pNHA/RAMSAR. Taking into account the cumulative effects from other existing and planned developments in the area, the potential for disturbance to birds and the erosion of the buffer, the appropriate assessment concludes that the proposal could result in negative impacts to the designated sites. It is difficult to quantify these impacts with currently available information. This means that negative impacts could not be ruled out at this stage even when appropriate mitigation measures were taken into account. In this event, and in accordance with the requirements of the directive, the precautionary principle must be applied.

As the Football academy forms an integral part of the Councils overall football development plan, the time frame imposed by the above would cause undesirable delays on the Councils ability to deliver on that plan.

Consequently it is recommended that Council does not proceed with the development in this location.

Fair enough Gizmo. You are entitled to your opinion.
I am entitled to mine.
I would love to see the Soccer Academy in Donabate.
And I support the call to protect the natural environment.

Believe it or not, its possably to want both things.
I'm a nature lover AND a soccer lover.

I dont accept that I cant have both. Call me choosy but there you go.
