FWIW, I agree with Johnny. Is it impossible to have both the estuary and the soccer development?

The council do own a lot of land near Ballymastone - not just the land referred to in the first few posts.

On a semi-related issue, I wonder will the LAP development of the Ballymastone land happen now? Is it committed to? The time scales given before were in a property-hot market. Are those time-scales in law or can they be pushed back?

Wonder if they'll happen at all?

Sydney,
The same argument that halted the development of a football academy near Rogerstown Estuary will now be employed to try and stop those elements of the LAP where the council planned to build near the estuaries.

Property slowdown or not, the estuaries can be employed to frustrate the LAP.

If you can't build a football academy near a Ramsar wetlands site, as per EU law, you certainly can't build housing.

I totally agree with you JMG. Donabate Parish Council oppose the soccer academy on the basis that they represent the community. Well they don't represent me or anybody I know. This development would have been a welcome addition to the area leading to the immediate area being represented by an Eircom League Club.
It would have had little or no effect to the habitat in the area and has been opposed by sport haters and serial objectors. I've often walked up to the Rogerstown estuary hide and surrounding area and can count on the fingers of one hand how many other people i've seen enjoying the scenery, other than bird watchers and it's too far from them to matter.
The people who objected to this are of a like mind to those who objected to the motorway bridge across the Broadmeadow estuary. Look at the devestation that caused after all the indignation. ie. none.
ps sorry for the rant

It is rather sad of you Podge to resort to inaccurate and offensive name calling to try and make your point.

The people who objected to the football academy are being misrepresented by you, and some of the others, who wanted it at Turvey.

It may not be convenient for you, but the fact of the matter is that those who objected did so not because they are sports haters but because the wrong location was chosen. That is why Donabate Portrane Community Council and Donabate Estuary Watch attempted to persuade the council to move the facility to Ballymastone in Donabate. If that site is good enough for housing it is good enough for a football complex.

It is a pity this debate is not conducted with a bit more manners and more respect for the other side, and honesty about the arguments being made, rather than featuring distortions and misrepresentations.

Please remember that citing the facility at Turvey would have been contrary to EU law.

The county council should never have proposed the Turvey site.

Soccer academy plans are ditched over bird shelter

A DECISION to ditch plans for a EUR10m soccer academy in North County Dublin because of its proximity to a bird sanctuary is a "blow" for sports clubs, it has been claimed.

Fingal County Council has recommended against locating the academy at Turvey Avenue in North Co Dublin over fears for a nearby bird sanctuary.

The sanctuary, at Rogerstown Estuary, is also a world wetlands site and a nature reserve.

The Department of the Environment had warned the council that the planned academy "could result. in negative impacts" on the estuary.

A council recommendation not to proceed with the development at Turvey Avenue is now due to be ratified by councillors on Monday.

But Conan Byrne of Sporting Fingal said the academy was to be "the whole backbone" of the football club.

Mr Byrne added: "It would be a blow if we did not get that facility down there (at Turvey Avenue). It will push us back a bit but it will make us more determined to set something up."

He expressed the hope that the facility would be able to locate somewhere else.

Mr Byrne (22), who plays midfield for Sporting as well as doubling as the club's marketing executive, said the academy would be community based and aimed at developing local players.

But Green Party councillor Robert Kelly welcomed the council's recommendation.

"We will be pushing for the council to make Rogerstown Estuary a special wildlife zone with walkways to Newbridge House and tree planting for both the natural wildlife and carbon off-setting," Cllr Kelly said.

Birdwatch Ireland, Conservation Volunteers Fingal, Coastwatch and An Taisce all submitted objections to the citing of the academy at Turvey Avenue.

The proposal involved an indoor soccer pitch, seating for 400 people and parking for 190 cars and 14 coaches.

The groups claimed the council's plans did not adequately consider the light and noise pollution, and threats to wildlife and habitats which would be caused.

Coastwatch said the proposed academy was just o.skm from the estuary, an EU-designated bird sanctuary, a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation.

Birdwatch said "the community benefits of wildlife protection should not be compromised in the process of providing this facility".

"The council do own a lot of land near Ballymastone"

The only way I can see Fingal sports building in Ballymastone is when the new road goes in at the Hearse road and in order for that to happen the LAP would have to be implemented fully to pay for the road with the builders offering and sub's etc ..its ain/t going to happen any day soon.. Thank God.....the road I mean!

opps!! there goes the biggest field left in north Dublin....and I'm sure theres a lot of hidden history in there toooooooo

anyway I don't know why kids cant' play ball on the roads and green spaces...oh wait thats illegal.....

Can anyone explain to me how this proposed development will impact on an estuary a mile away. There are golf courses, allotments, walkways, bird watching hides much closer to the estuary ( human activity, noise, light etc) . Dont tell me I dont get it. The proposal to site it at Ballamastone was ridiculous the lands there are already used or in the process of being used by St Pats and St Itas. The other land there is zoned for building.

Anyway this fabulous facility has been lost to Donabate, Lusk is being considered and they are delighted. We had an opportunity to make Donabate the sporting capital of Fingal, thanks to An Taisce, Parish Council, Burrow Residents Association,Sprout Party,Tree fetish people and birdwatchers this will not happen.
