I read with interest the proposal by C.c Gerry Mcguire to seek permission for the building of 20 apartments on club lands.
I think as HE is a member of the said club he has a bit of cheek and I for one will oppose him all the way!!

anyone else read this in the Fingal today?

Why would you contest him all the way just because HE is a member?? The members invested their money into Turvey, have put in a lot of work to improve it and they have land at the back that they can make money on.. Whats the problem, have you seen the develpoments up the road, across the road its everywhere!!

I say if the members are backing him which I know they are then go for it and get some money back to further develop the Club or Greens or whatever!

I wish them luck,
If Tescos can get away with building that monstrosity then Ild be surprised if Turvey Golf Club wont get it!!

Gerry is a member of Beaverstown Golf Club, I am not aware of him being a member of Turvey as well.

Where is next? Donabate Golf Club, Balcarrick GC. Maybe a block of flats on the Island GC overlooking the Malahide Marina???

If the land is rezoned from Recreational to Residential
it will open up the floodgates for golf club all over the country.
Land is zoned Recreational for a very good reason. To create space for people who already live there to play, have fun, relax.

The green in front of St Patricks terrace is public slace recreational. Would anyone object to building a few blocks of apartments on that?

If the councilors vote to rezone recreational land they should be sacked from their jobs and the council abolished and run by the County Manager.

"The members invested their money into Turvey, have put in a lot of work to improve it and they have land at the back that they can make money on."

That is nonsense. The whole point of planning regulations and zoning of land is to prevent any pack of muppets squeezing a few Euro our of their land at the expense of the locality and environment. Golf clubs are in existence because the council, by (supposedly) representing the good of the people and the environment, has granted them the right to use the land for recreational use. Changing that requires re-zoning, and I for one would like an explication if they think they can do this without impunity, simply because one of their members thinks they can abuse their position.

I'm guessing the author of this comment is a member of Turvey and thinks its okay for his little club to do what they want so they can stock nicer chairs the bar.

Regardless of weather Gerry is a member or not he is acting on behalf of the Turvey GC committee as a councilor he proposed this idea or brought the idea to the floor and it was voted on and passed by the OTHER councilors which attended the full council meeting, and the planners can moan all they like about having to prepare a variation to the development plan which is perfectly legal and stated in Fingals planning regs, and thinking back there wasn?t much moaning by the planners of Fingal when a variation was carried out, to rezone open space in Swords so the Council Headquarters could be erected on it.

It would make you wonder why in the latest development plan 2005-2011 Fingal zoned Turvey GC open space but yet placed local objectives (132, 134 and 135) on it which refer to pedestrian links to the village and future development being kept back from the tree and hedgerow lined boundary. Also the apartments that are planned, will not be full term living accommodation but will fall under the planning area of leisure and tourism accommodation which will allow people not only golfers to stay there, for example a two week holiday, and before anyone starts elevating there own pedestal I am not a golfer in any club anywhere,

Xanthomas - If the existing ones are holiday homes then some people must get very long holidays, years in fact.

I read in the Fingal independent that the rezoning from Recreational to Residential was passed by all the Labour councilors (bar one) the FGa nd FF councilors too.
The Greens and the Socialist Party opposed.

This opens up some interesting possablities;

Donabate Golf Club borders the Ballymastone developments.
I assume Cllr Gerry Maguire will facilitate the building of apartemnts and houses on the Donabate Golf Club when the time comes.

Beaverstown Golf Club is in prime location beside various housing estates to capitalise on the variation.
No doubt Cllr Gerry Maguire will be on hand once again to smooth things thru.

Then again, he may not get re-elected, but it wont matter because the precedent is set and the damage is done.

Quite a political legacy to leave behind.

Its very misleading to suggest that our local councillor is in favour of rezoning all recreational land in the area. The Turvey Golf Club is a specific case and has been on the cards for years. The motion as noted had cross party support in the county council and the plans had support from Donabate Portrane Community Council and other local groups. Gerry is a decent cllr, represents the area very well and deserves to be re-elected. I'll be out supporting him come the elections and I know many other will aswell.
