I personally disagree with your analysis that a republic was available through diplomacy in 1916 but we can agree to differ.
You talk about democracy though. With that comes free speech, and if this guy wants to comemorate a piece of Irish History here, relevant to the area, then you can't censor it.
The government, the army and the president comemorated the rising in town on Sunday.
Why can't he?

While we're at it, we can tell the Yanks to stop celebrating the 4th July, as that was also an uprising against the British.

whilst I respect your view completely Terontress and I do not agree with resorting to violence .Was not the revolutionary war in the United States a similar scenario or the Hungarian uprising .The removal of what was considered to be an oppressive unjust regime .
Were the actions of the ANC in South Africa and the leadership of Nelson Mandela not just ,considering the abomination of apartheid .
Politicians and the rich and famous are now queing up to see and be seen with Nelson Mandela.
I Think human beings who died for what they believed in rightly or wrongly should be afforded the respect they deserve dont you agree?
It is an emotional topic ,and you are 100%right when you say it is inappropriate for this medium. |

| My final question is whether we should celebrate the Dublin and Monaghan bombings as they were an act which were part of the process which led to a devolved assembly in Northern Ireland? |

Well, they were against us, so not much to celebrate.
Anyway, probably better for the pub this discussion, where you can get tired and emotional and end up throwing drinks in each others faces.

I think 'commemorate' is the appropriate word, rather than 'celebrate'.

Depends who "us" is.
As mentioned previously, the terrorists of the 1916 Rebellion had very little public support. The British soldiers who came in to quash it were welcomed with open arms.
So you'll most likely find that those involved in 1916 were against "us" as well.
And if some organisation blew up the railway bridges today, I'd be furious whether they be for or against "us".
What about the Enniskillen bomb. Were the people who planted that "us" or them?
Or Omagh? |
