I think the expression is one governments terrorist is another governments freedom fighter.
I don't see the connection between Enniskillen and the Easter Rising, after the civil war no Southern Government gave any support to the IRA. As a democratic Nationalist I can take great pride in my heritage and feel no connection with the atrocities carried out by Sinnfein IRA.
But a small point on atrocities when the Allies fire bombed Dresden in ww2 burning and suffocating over 50,000 mostly women children and old men, a city with no military value do you call the Allies terrorists?
No doubt the Allies would call it collateral damage now days, the Germans concider it a war crime, but they don't interfere with the British War commemorations, should you criticise ours? |

How dare you terrontress try to comapre the volunteers of 1916 to islamic terrorists!
You assume the volunteers at the time had no local support ,infact unlike the rest of the country pre rising fingal towns and villages donabate, swords and lusk were hotbeds of republican support which was led by respected local teacher Thomas Ashe who later died on hunger strike.
Also a relevant point the quatermaster of the fingal IRA who fought at battle Ashbourne Frank Lawless was elected TD for Dublin North 2 years later in 1918 elections! So your attempts to potray them in the same form as Islmaic fundementalists is ridiculous and ignorant.
The terrorists in Ireland were the RIC and the Black and Tans , the sack of Balbriggan one
notable example
some volunteers from donabate who fought in Ashbourne eventually went on to be part of the foundation of St Pats GAA club this is part of the local legacy they left behind along with helping achieving freedom for the 26countys and they will always be remembered.
Last easter sunday(07)at the parish hall a commemration was held by the Fingal Old IRA Committee and a speech given by Sean Ryan a large turnout was present people of all political parties were present hounouring the sacrifice made for a free Ireland.
Sorry about the quantity:) |

I am well aware of Dresden. I was there 10 years ago. It was a complete outrage, carried out when Germany was unable to defend herself as a show of strength to the Russians.
I've seen the pictures of bodies piled high on street corners. Been and donated to the rebuilding of the Frauenkirche.
Should not have happened. Nor Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And I think most people accept that and do not drone on about it in a triumphalist fashion. |

| That's your opinion however I'm a pacifist and a democrat. I'm proud of it and will challenge inflammatory rhetoric. Especially that which has been cut and pasted by someone who seems to be educationally sub-normal and has an issue with grammar. |

Well I'm not a pacifist and I don't agree with much of what you have said but I will always defend your right to say it.
The Easter rebellion had a massive impact on the course of our history, it led to the split of the United Kingdom for the south of Ireland at least. If it had not happened then it may never have, look at Scotland, they would love their independence but may never survive the drop in living standards if separated from England.
This state has gone through many changes and challenges over the last 90 odd years and its only now becoming comfortable in its skin, confident in its relationship with Britain and celebrating, marking or simply recognising its past. I'm not sure other countries on these islands can claim the same, Ive met English people on holidays who have felt more welcome in the South of Ireland than in Scotland or Wales.
I look forward to the visit of Queen Elizabeth next year, she is very welcome and we can always do with more tourists, and I cant wait for 2016 when we can celebrate Rebel Easter properly.
Kevin Myers eat your heart out you'll never lose your column with supporter's like T.

I did not say they had no support. I said they did not have public support. There is a difference.
I believe in peoples' right to express extreme views. I just don't think that this is the correct place to do it.
Green & Black (chocolate?). I apologise for my earlier insult and take it back. |
