A Walkway to Malahide - Dare We Hope?
This would be the best bit of pro-active council thinking I have encountered in the last 5 years. I just hope it's not pie in the sky.

From Michael Kennedy:

A Chara

Since the collapse of the railway line, I have been pressing Fingal County Council and Iarnr￳d Eireann to use the opportunity to plan for a pedestrian and cycle path from Malahide to Donabate.
My colleague Councillor Darragh Butler tabled the under-noted item for the December 2009 meeting of Fingal County Council. You will note we have been informed that discussions are ongoing between Irish Rail and Fingal County Council with a view to constructing a pedestrian/cycle bridge, parallel to the rail viaduct, as a variation to the reconstruction contract.

Works are continuing at the viaduct site and the Council is confident that the provision of a pedestrian bridge structure will be delivered during this phase of the works.

As the use of such a structure would necessarily give additional public access to lands within the area of the inner estuary, this may constitute a material change in the environment in that area such open access must be subject to the normal assessment that such change would warrant.

The Council will assemble proposals to deliver access on a phased basis which then must be subject to the appropriate statutory procedure before pedestrian access can be permitted to any additional pedestrian bridge structure.

Kayaking and Sea Scouts

Malahide Sea Scouts have requested that their plans for kayaking be considered by Iarnr￳d Eireann. Irish Rail has informed me that they will consider the proposals once they have received the drawings, illustrations and photographs from the Sea Scouts.

I am pleased that Irish Rail will make every effort to facilitate the continuation of kayaking amenities but of course the priority for safety of the bridge and commuters is crucial.

I hope this information will be of interest to you and please feel free to contact me if you need help on any issue by filling in the section below.

Furthermore, I want again to thank you for your support and to wish you and your family a very happy and peaceful New Year.

Ath-Bhliain faoi mhaise ortsa agus ar do chlann.

Is mise le meas,

Michael Kennedy

Personally, I think that would be one of the most wonderful pieces of infrastructure seen in North County Dublin for a very very long time.

Fingers crossed but I won't be getting my hopes up!

Amazing it all seems common sense to me. I hope you'll be able to cycle on it.

When the collapse took place, I sugested on this forum that the opportunity was "ripe" to press for this - but also to make this "pathway/walkway" wide enough to facilitate Emergency Services vehicles in the (unlikely) event that the Peninsula were ever to be cut-off in a catastrophe!!!!!
I'm glad to see that someone is thinking........

Hey "ejb" - no!
I live a long, long way from there! but I keep very much in touch with the area where I was born and raised! I know I'm very much "out-of-the-loop" on a lot of happenings and goings-on so my comments may reflect the fact that I'm not as "plugged-in" as most of you are!

Well it's a good idea, The Vs attack Donabate and seal off Hearse and Turvey. We can leg it out through the Malahide walkway!

Trevor Sargent has been taking about this coastal walk way through the north county for years now, I for one wont be holding out much hope of it ever happening, that would be to much like joined up thinking and FCC and CO dont do very much of that!

The thing that gives me hope is the fact that there's pretty much the foundations of a road built all alongside the line now due to the re-construction work.

I actually think access through the farmland, and the planning/purchase of this access would be the main obstacle.. if the political will exists as he says it does.

I think the guy is pretty motivated at the moment as it's looking like his first stint as a TD might come to an abrupt end quicker than he thought due to FFs current ratings.

Might be the time to "tighten the screws" and have every local group jump in and support him!
I can just see the "powers that be" waste money and remove the temporary access installed for the fix-up rather than use what has been put in place as a foundation for something that everyone would support
