I thought I was in Jurassic Park today ,there was a very large, what looked like an eagle of some kind ,with a wing span of at least 6ft ready to pounce on something in the large field on the left as you head west on the Hearse Road. This is a very large raptor ,and I would love if there is someone out there who could identify it for me as my curiosity is getting the better of me .It appears that the bird has now taken up residence on the Peninsula as I saw it hovering a few weeks ago near the tyre changing business just 25ft over the road.
It was like National Geographic in the flesh.Amazing, what a great place we live in on this Peninsula. |

We actually spent the whole day down around the waters of Donabate birdwatching.
we seen some great birds, the best for me was the lapwing and a young grey Heron.
There a quite a few male Phasents on the back roads
I had the pleasure of seeing a barn owl down by Kilcrea a few years ago, it was unreal hunting by nightsomethings are just that bit special watch out for buzzards around Turvey. |

| What you saw was probably a buzzared, you will often see them high up circuling an area looking for prey. Often seen at rogerstown and ballymastone area. |

Hi Jimmy, its not a buzzard, its much bigger from what what seen by my daughter who knows something about birds this bird was sitting on the trees in the field on the Hearse road that had the scallions growing in lastyear, it was on thursday at dusk so she did'nt get a clear view of it except its size.
It might do for Donabate what Fungi did for Dingle "s" |

It's most probably a buzzard all right. I saw one this morning hovering over the slip road from the Donabate roundabout to the M1. I've also seen them over the Hearse road and in Newbridge itself where apparently they are nesting.
There are a lot of them now in Louth, Meath and Fingal having arrived here from Britain (and also from the North ). They are an amazing large raptor success story. They started arriving in Antrim from Britain a few years ago and are repopulating the whole island. They used to live here fado fado but they became extinct. I remember seeing one in the the mountains on a trip to Wales when I was a kid and it stayed with me. There are a lot of high profile reintroduction efforts such as that of the Golden eagle (Donegal), white tailed eagle (Kerry) and Red Kite (Wicklow) which take a huge effort by conservationist and park rangers both to source birds from Scotland and Norway and then try to establish them. Farmers have poisoned a lot of birds in these cases. The buzzard is remarkable because he arrived here all on his own without our help and is thriving. Maybe because his diet is more varied. He is almost as big as those other big marque birds. In flight he looks particularly impressive hovering and soaring to great heights. Apparently you can see a group of them in the sky sometimes by St. Margaret's. During biodiversity day in Newbridge you can see buzzards up close.
I also used to see a kestrel on the M1 near the airport. A much smaller native bird but has similar spectacular hovering. I've also seen kestrels hovering over the meadow between the round tower and the cliff walk.

| Sorry just to be clear on what I meant to say. I am speaking to the original poster when I say what they saw was probably a buzzard. I'm not doubting that you saw an owl snapper. Sheesh you gotta be careful on these interweb forum thingagigs :) |
