Donabate and Portrane Discussion Forum

Residents Association & Anti Social Behaviour
I wonder is it possible to obtain a list of contacts for the various residents associations, particularly for the dwellings close to the village.

Reason I ask is that we have experienced a lot of bad behaviour in and around the village and the grassy area between the Fairways and the Spires.

The gardai have been helpful, but resources are stretched and the Council are aware of the issue but suggested I contact the residents associations in the area, who may have established communications with the Parks Dept. at Fingal, and be aware of their plans.

It seems with their current "meadow grass" policy it may be the perfect time for this area to be re-examined and perhaps replanted/modified to "weed out" the trouble makers ( no pun intended)

If anyone can help please let me know, we would be most grateful.

When parking behind the Pharmacy I've noticed the 'usual suspects' littering the area. I've often wondered where are their parents? I recognise most of them as they seem to be the same children hanging around the village, more often than normal kids of their age. The suggestion of contact between residents or an umbrella residents association is a good one. It may even develop into having a Mayor of Donabate. Now I know some will say what is the point of that, particularly if they had no powers, however it may do no harm to give some sort of prominence to a local person with the concerns of the community at heart. Judging from previous contributions to threads there are even some worthwhile potential candidates on the existing Parish Council and elsewhere. In the latest issue of the North County Leader Michael Kennedy has highlighted the need for a stronger Garda presence on the peninsula, the elusive Gerry Maguire celebrated Beaverstown GC 25th anniversary whilst in an 'exclusive interview' with Dr. Reilly, the paper announced he has big plans for North County. He was then reported as proposing a few things that are already at an advance stage of development without once referencing one of the most serious issue facing our community. Whilst I have no doubt his personal ambition for high office will sustain his enthusiasm it is, in my opinion, a poor substitute for a sincere voice from the peninsula who could galvanise popular support on issues of common concern to all residents.

Up to a few years back there was always a Lord Mayor of Donabate/Portrane elected - as far as I know the last one never gave up his chain of office but is to be seen outside of Keelings most days propping up his stick!!!Suppose it would do no harm to have someone else "in office" who might have some clout with the local government/council reps in dealing with the anti social behaviour which is at the moment plaguing both Portrane and Donabate.

Apologies in advance, but I'm going to have a bit of a rant here. First of all I have lived in Donabate for 11 years and have enjoyed it immensely and my 2 children were born here and I've done my best to integrate into the local community.

I enjoy this forum and some of the characters who contribute to it are great, however some of the stories I read recently have been very depressing.

The vast majority of the people who live here are great law abiding people and the problems are caused by a few "bad eggs" however I would caution about the "far away hills are greener" syndrome as other parts of Dublin/Ireland are suffering equal challenges.

I think the way forward is to get some sort of group or forum together that people can join and show their support. There is an election coming and the one thing that will engage and force local politicians to act is a significant number of people (ie possible voters) who have a number of clear objectives they want to achieve and are prepared to reward the person(s) who deliver them with their votes (irrespective of their individual political views). Perhaps a committee with representatives of all the residents association is the way to go.

But remember the only real way to solve this is by the vast majority of decent residents here to take collective action to prevent anti-social behavior. By banding together and supporting each other we can try and deal with the issues we face and use our collective might to mobilise politicians the police etc.

I wish you well with the residents association and we should all support people who are trying to improve our community.

Donabate is definitely a great place to love but you can't ignore the increasing levels of anti social behaviour.

Yesterday afternoon I observed a group of teens outside supervalu clearly drunk. These guys were around the 14/15 age group and are recognisable as they are always hanging around the village.

This evening while on my walk I passed by a girl of no more than 15 sitting on the path with her feet dangling out onto the main road drinking from a bottle of what looked like wine and shouting base at people across the road. On my way back the same group of teens from yesterday had joined her at the side of the road.

My problem with all of this is that it's obvious the parents don't give a rats ar5e what their kids get up to. If a complete stranger notices them drunk in the afternoon then surely when they get home the parents must notice?

There are two avenues you can go through to solve/report any issues:

1) Community Council who meet once a month and have a post box in the Community Centre where you can place any concerns you have and they will be raised or; you can call in to Linda on reception and she'll give you a phone number to call: and
2) Neighbourhood Watch. They also meet once a month with the Gardai and residents associations and highlight all the problems in the area. Their number is: 087 2882130

With regard to the medow areas there is a consultative process on hand at the moment between residents associations and the parks department. The Community Council will give you the name of the appropriate person in your estate to contact about this.

Donabate/Portrane is a very active area for volunteers and appropriate groups. There is always someone you can call/write to if you have any concerns.

I do agree with some of the comments re: teenagers drinking, it is a grave concern but I also agree it's up to us to intervene too. Anytime I see someone misbehaving, I whip out my mobile phone and take a photo of them, I find that soon softens their cough. They usually clear off straight away if there's photographic evidence.

It's worth remembering though, we do live in the nicest place in Dublin and the majority of us are good people.

I hope that information helps to ease your mind. Call into the Community Centre or ring Neighbourhood Watch if you have any problems. Cheers!

Dragging up an old but not forgotten topic.

I am in the process of contacting as many residents associations as I can, and have written and received replies from some of the local Councillors,Senators, TD's and Gardai.

My aim is to highlight the ongoing and worsening anti social behaviour problems on the peninsulas,to join forces, stamp out the problem and reclaim our area and return it to the beautiful scenic town it once was.

Summer is upon us and unless we act now we have a long and unpleasant few months (if not years)ahead of us. Can everyone spread the word and please advise me of contact details for residents associations, neighborhood watch schemes etc and hopefully we can arrange a very large public meeting in the coming weeks in the community centre or similar. Please email me to ImproveDonabate@gmail.com if you are willing to come out show your support and be kept informed on this urgent matter.

Please spread the word ASAP wherever you see fit, email ImproveDonabate@gmail.com.

You could try a few decoy cameras mounted on the existing light poles. These have a battery that drives a red flashing led that is visible from the front of the housing. Might work ?

Lets be realistic here Sgt Toner ,what is needed in Donabate is not the policy of David Cameron of lets a hug a hoodie, but Garda visibility on the streets .
I have a great deal of respect for the Gardai and the very difficult duties they have to perform ,but you are our Guardians of the peace and that should involve a proactive strategy of nipping trouble in the bud before it involves a breach of the peace and an arrest, and the consequential waste of public funds in the prosecution .That means a Guard walking the streets and getting to know each and every individual in the village they patrol ,there is no other solution.
