Negative equity?
The population of Donabate in 2002 census was 3,854, in the 2006 census it was 5,499.

This would suggest a huge number of people living in Donabate have bought since 2002 and that would suggest a large amount of people in Donabate are cash strapped or are living in negative equity.

Similar arguments for Portrane.

I reckon the percentage of people in negative equity in Donabate is as high as nearly anywhere in Ireland. This makes it harder for local businesses to thrive. Especially when they are charged massive rents.

What difference does that make to the money in your pocket? you still pay the same amount unless your interest rate has increased. It is only an issue if you want to move.

And with unemployment at its highest in 20 years, Banks increasing their interest rates independently of the the EU Central Bank (which is already at rock bottom and can only go up) and the next budget in December no doubt going to increase taxes, its not a pretty picture.

So what? Well it depends on many things:

1. Whether you need to move or want to move?
2. If you still have a job?
3. How secure your job is?
4. How likely someone in your family would bail you out if things got really bad?
5. How likely it is you will have to bail someone else in your family out?
6. Are you on a tracker, fixed or variable mortgage?
7. If you are due a big inheritance someday?

So I don't like really like making generalisations even though the media love making them. Suffice to say a lot of people have a lot less money to spend where we live which has to affect local businesses more than it will elsewhere.

Your thoughts...
