Herons
If you keep fish in a pond, I would advise you to heron proof it. I lost 10 fish on Sunday morning and I strongly suspect that a heron is the culprit.

If the heron is reading this, I'll meet you ouside Supervalue at 9.00 p.m. tonight.

To lose 1 is unfortunate but to lose 10 seems careless.

it wasn't as bad as I first thought. There's a lot of rock cover in the pond and the fish started to reappear last night. I counted 7 of the 10 so hopefully most or all survived. They were very nervous so something definitely happened.

There is now a net over the pond to make sure there isn't a reoccurance.

Herons are very devious and will wait hours to catch one fish. They tend to strike at dusk or dawn so are rarely seen in gardens.

I've heard many stories of ponds being cleared out around Donabate. I assumed mine was ok because of the rock cover. Looks like I could have been right, but added the net to be sure.

Mr. Heron emptied my pond of fish this week - actually saw the cheeky b***** land beside the pond yesterday evening at dusk. I suppose he was hoping I had re-stocked.

Will a net protect the fish? My two dogs and the cat are obviosuly not a deterant. Let us know cos I'm not putting more fish in just to feed this menace. By the way was quite shocked as to how big herons actually are!
