Herons
I got a net in B&Q. You'll find them in the gardening section for around ?14. It needs to be a very fine strong net and stretch it tightly across the pond. It's doing the job for me so far. Don't bother with those dummy herons. I believe they're useless.

I was out in the garden on Tuesday night around dusk and the heron appeared. He swooped down towards the garden, but saw me and took off again. The things you see when you don't have a shotgun.

Herons
I presume you're referring to Ardea cinerea which is their latin name. I would advise you not to harm this bird as they are protected.

I also wouldn't discharge a shotgun in a built up area for obvious reasons.

You appear to be doing the right thing to protect your fish. Remember the heron is only following it's instinct.
