I'm a big fan of seafood and apparently Howth is the nearest place for a good variety of tasty sea faring grub.
Does anyone know any other good spots closer?
As a sideline, I tried the local Indian takeaway for the first time since it opened and I have to say it is much improved from the first crowd.

| Stoop your Head in Skerries does a great seafood chowder and fish of the day special great when you are watching the sun go down in the evening over the harbour. |

| The Red Bank in Skerries is one of the best in my opinion. However, it's expensive and only for special ocassions. |

I agree that the red Bank is very good. It may be a bit pricey but they do a very good value early bird menu..... |

| Cant beat Stoop your head in Skerries, does a great midweek lunch as well !Skerries is only 20 mins away by car and is probably closer than Howth, plus if you fancy a drink there is the train but its a fair distance from the station in Skerries to Stoop ! |

| Agree with those Skerries recommendations and they are no more expensive than Howth - which for a fishing port really knows how to charge for the stuff. |

Apparently one of the reasons fish is expensive even straight off the boat in Howth is because it commands such a high price on the european market. Your Dublin bay prawns are much more likey to be eaten in Turin than Tallaght.

Price reasoning is puzzling? I often see seafood in Italy, France and Spain at much cheaper prices than here in markets and supermarkets.
Also would the raw product here not have to endure higher costs as it is passed up the chain having to be frozen, then shipped and unpacked on the continent, leaving an even tighter profit margin at the bottom for the fishermen?
Maybe the problem with our fish is a combination of the lack of demand (apart from all the processed shite sent back to us from the continent from our own fish - fishburgers, fishsticks etc) and also the pricing out of most people out of the market here.
I'd guess this is probably a result of the usual high cost of doing business things here and also the high profit margins placed by the sellers whilst they screw the fishermen?
Anyway back to original topic - I also recommend stoops - reasonably priced and you can tell it is quality. Menu is focussed on a few fish dishes prepared well and freshly - not the usual frozen deep fried 86 page menu crap on offer in some places (or plaices). |
