| Is anyone interested to setting up group to organise Summer Festival for next year? Can tell you now that there is lots of work and not a lot of glory so those who want the glory need not bother. The festival should encourage community spirit, which this village needs as it has grown so much since the previous festivals. And it is be great fun, if there are enough people to share the load. I am just putting the idea out there. Up to you readers what happens to it. |

| I never knew there was a previous festival, what was the theme, location etc like? Would the plan be to replicate this again? Are you looking to bring the community together or attract others from outside? |

There have been lots of festivals in the parish over the years and they covered many aspects of community spirit. In their hayday there was a Festival Queen comp where the winner was entered for the Rose of Tralee. There was also music in each of the pubs on a nightly basis and that was just the adult entertainment.
For the kids there were day trips to places like Mosney, iceskating, Wicklow as well as workshops, "Beat on the Street" both in Donabate and Portrane. An art comp run with the help of the teachers in the schools. One of the many favourites was a Parade from Donabate to Portrane with floats by many of the different clubs and businesses in the area and a fun day on the Green in Portrane. There was also a Festival Raffle which was usually a very good prize.
Gosh! That brings back wonderful memories as well as raising the stress levels on thinking of the things that used to/could go wrong! |

Festival started in 1990 to mark 50 years of Parish Council. In those early years the pubs would get a general extention for the duration until 1.30am. They would not give the list of events they were running until the booklet was ready for printing!! When the automatic extention came into force the pubs lost interest in that part of it.
At some stage we started to do more art related events with the kids and less trips, as we discovered grants to help us.
Last festival was 2004. The Youth Club then started to run kids workshops for few weeks in the summer and, I must say, were so professional about it that they put us to shame! But they had enough last year and disbanded.
I am not interested in running another festival but feel it's about time it was resurrected. There are plenty of us with huge experience but we served out time. But between us we could help with advice.
Anyway, the idea is out there now. If people are interested the furst step would be to organise a general meeting to see if enough would turn up to form a committee. Do up plenty of notices and plaster the parish with them. The first and most important lesson is communication. But it needs to get off the ground in Sept to organise for July 2011.
