www.irishindependent.ie/national-news/polish-watress-packs-in-job-for-good-life-on-welfare

I work part time because I cannot afford child care costs and my other half works full time.If I was to give up work tomorrow I would be entitled to sweet f..k all as I am married. We like a lot of people are busting our guts day in day out and reading this shite really infuriates me.There are genuine people on the dole that have worked all their life and end up on the Dole through no fault of their own and who do not want to be there and then you have people like this girl who are screwing the system for everything they can get.Its soooo wrong.

The system is there to be screwed. Read that article this morning and some of the comments - one saying that in Germany for example (not that we have to be like the germans, just that it seems perfectly reasonable to me), if you give up your job, you get nothing. If you are on social welfare and are offered a job you have to take it or lose welfare. Social welfare is emergency funding to allow you to live. It should not be a choice.

For most honest hardworking citizens, the dole is a safety net when things go wrong.

For many others.. and not just welfare tourists.. it is a lifestyle choice.

The Polish girl story is just hi-lighting something we choose to ignore from within our own community.

Looks like much of that article has been produced from some Indo journo's bowels - possibly to promote a personal or editorial agenda.

Here's a post from politics.ie about it.

"I am Polish, will be happy to help if there is anything you would like to know.

The article is badly mistranslated and things are twisted and taken out of context. I read the original article a couple of days ago; it is about four or five Poles living on welfare in Ireland, how they ended up on welfare and what are their plans. Some of them are looking for work, some are opening their own businesses, some are happy to stay on the dole. One is working cash in hand while claiming.

The woman in question took a FAS massage therapist course and plans to open her own massage salon some time soon, to avail of the back to business (or whatever it's called) allowance to help her out at the beginning. Her standard of living is very modest (she lists purchases like ?1 Penneys yoga pants she got on a sale) and she is bartering for some services from local shops etc in exchange for massage therapy. She is in Donegal and says that for some it's the most beautiful place in the world and for others it's the ultimate sh*thole but she is enjoying herself, going out to see the sunrise every day. She used to work as a waitress but the work was exhausting, she was working long into the night for a small wage and the manager was not sharing tips they were getting from weddings. She is taking her time on welfare to relax, live modestly and to learn massage and how to run her business.

There are a few more stories like that; some people are pictured as more enterprising and others are plain scroungers (the cash in hand guy).

The gist of the article is that the benefits are very (too?) generous but also that this type of welfare coupled with training is supportive if you have a good chance of returning to the workforce like she and some others are planning to do. Polish welfare runs out quickly and then it's sink or swim; a lot of people sink."

Yeah the Indo has become a right rag. That said, welfare should not be a choice so you can get out of your current job (even if it is awful), relax and get your sh*t together. We're borrowing the money to pay her welfare against our kids' futures.

You don't get welfare if you willingly give up your job, only if you're made redundant or take an redundancy package and even then its not indefinate.

Why is it that the media portrays the foreigners as the scroungers when there are an awful lot of Irish scroungers? The vast majority of foreigners worked hard and did the low paid jobs which WE IRISH looked down on during the good times. It sickens me all of this type of judgemental stuff which is inciting racism. No one seems to be complaining about the source of these problems which have led us into this situation mainly the bankers and inefficient politicians. We need to put pressure on the politicians to change the system instead of moaning about foreigners who are after all, only claiming what the system entitles them to claim.

Herbie, I dont think that the media expose the foreigners any differently then they would an irish person.I have read about Irish people who where exposed in the same manner.Yes I agree there are as many Irish that are milking the system. But if you give an interview like this to a paper well then be prepared for the backlash.Sure, there are a lot of hard working polish people in this country but remarks like this from one of their own only puts the spot light on their community. Its not the Irish peoples fault or the media for that. They can only blame it on their own people.

The article was rubbish. It was mis-translated.

Nothing in there that an Irish person wouldn't say

One thing that is interesting about this whole thing is that Fas is still chugging away in the background.

Why are we paying people to go on rubbish courses to be trained in something in what is presumably a an already very competitive and open service industry?
